There are thousands of examples of Spongebob subliminal messages and this article will highlight just a few of them.
Spongebob Squarepants is an immensely popular children's cartoon. it grew in popularity very quickly and is now watched around the world - by children and adults alike.
It is one of the few cartoons apart from perhaps the Simpsons which appeal to both adults and children. This is due to the clever writing as it also has adult based jokes to keep the older generations entertained. Apparently this is the factor that ensures it is enjoyed by teenagers and grown ups too.
In the theme tune there are allegedly subliminal statements if you play the song in reverse. There are videos which show this and the messages which have been found include the phrases:
- Squidward smokes dope
- Sh** on your multiple cannibal heart
- Show me your p***y you son of a hun
Pretty strange huh? But this is nothing compared to the sexual and homosexual innuendos and hidden messages in the episodes themselves. Here are some examples:
There is a famous video of a scene with Mr Krabs, and apparently he says “Any Po*n in this store?”. This is perhaps not technically a subliminal message, as it is said forwards, it is just blurred and debatable what he is actually meant to be saying. Perhaps this is just an example of the voice actor making his mark on the show?
There are several videos highlighting the various innuendos and hidden messages throughout the numerous spongebob episodes, and the movie. Once you know what to look out for you will see phallic symbols everywhere. There are plenty of sexual references, and references to characters being or calling each other homosexual. Some subliminals are questionable, and although the messages in Spongebob are sometimes not even very “subliminal” there is nothing questionable about them. There are definitely hidden meanings and different layers to the cartoon. i.e. children watching it will see one thing, and adults will understand it on a higher level – more genius than manipulative if you ask me.
